sulu hornbill
Very little is known about this bird.
DESCRIPTION
Males and females look alike but the female are smaller in size.
habitat
It is endemic to the three Sulu islands in the Philippines. But now only lives on one of the Sulu islands (Tawitawi) where their are only 20 pairs! They live in Lowland and Highland Rainforests.
diet
Sulu Hornbills feed on fruit, insects & small lizards.
breeding
We only know about the Sulu Hornbills breeding because of the local people. Only two babies will hatch out of two clutches of eggs in May-June. They need large tree hollows to nest in.
threats
The Sulu Hornbill is the worlds most endangered Hornbill and is classified as Critically Endangered. There is only 20 pairs left! The reason that the Sulu Hornbill no longer lives on two islands that it used to is because they are nearly entirely logged! Sulu Hornbills don't live in any protected areas.
Another threat to it is hunting. Babies are taken out of the nest and adults are shot on site, for target practice or for food! Who would do this?
Scientists believe it will be the first type of Hornbill to go extinct in the 21st century.
